From the Founder

As a young adult, I knew that I wanted to help women and girls who are hurting. I didn’t always know how that would look in the future.

My husband and I have pastored a church for many years. We have met many people from all kinds of backgrounds and cultures. In 2001, I was leading a Bible study on marriage. When childhood sexual abuse came up, almost all of the women in the study voiced that they too had been sexually abused. I was like, “What is going on?” It blew my mind. I had no idea that so many women had such traumatic childhoods. Those experiences formed who they were as adult women.

In 2007, I drove by an old Victorian house near our church in Waterford, Michigan. It was a true fixer-upper, but something pulled at me. I thought to myself, “What if this house was beautiful? What if it became a community house for women and girls — a place where they could heal from past hurts and create good memories?” Through a series of miraculous events and the faithfulness of God’s people, we bought the house in 2011. The community of Waterford united to help remodel and transform it for the next 5 years. We opened officially in 2017.

As our team started to work with women and girls, I realized there was a huge need for a support system for girls living in residential care. The Well started to connect with group homes, foster care agencies, and juvenile detention centers. Our old Victorian house started to become a welcome day program partner to help at-risk girls.

Your brain tends to remember moments of high emotion. Just as traumatic experiences can change someone’s life, so can encounters with God’s love. At The Well, we want to facilitate an experience that cultivates good feelings of happiness and safety. A few hours of change where a teenage girl gets to experience a fancy dinner with a Victorian setting, craft time with individual attention, and a teaching from a special speaker to share Jesus’ love. We do that in an environment of excellence that maybe they have never experienced before.

Our focus is to reinforce their worth. To let them know that they are valuable to God and that they have a purpose. To let them know we love them.

Thank you for joining with us,
Dana
